How do the earliest days shape a lifetime?
Our research lab is based in Innsbruck, Austria, where the alpine landscape is a constant reminder that nothing exists in isolation and that we are all embedded in interconnected ecosystems. This guides our comprehensive approach to newborn health. We explore how the earliest experiences can set the stage for lifelong wellbeing, particularly in the most vulnerable neonatal populations such as preterm infants and critically ill neonates. Our work explores key questions like: How can we prevent neonatal brain injury and improve outcomes for affected newborns? What influences the development of a healthy cardiovascular system? How does human breast milk affect immunological processes? And what role do environmental factors play? By bridging clinical insights and laboratory research, we're piecing together how to give vulnerable newborns the best possible start in life.
